It’s Thursday again

It’s Thursday again

So like the title says it’s Thursday and time to go grocery shopping. Today it seems was worse than the usual Thursday for some reason. Maybe there were extra old people in my way I’m not sure. I know there are sweet old folks everywhere that I would enjoy time with, listening to old stories or asking questions about how things used to be. Somehow these people don’t ever seem to be the same ones that are yelling, complaining or blocking the aisles when I am there though.

I once again was reminded why I think that this planet as a whole needs a culling, and starting with the old and infirm may be a good idea. Don’t get me wrong I don’t have it out for old people normally, some of my favorite people are old. Today seemed to be particularly filled with crotchety old people though. I watched two of them almost start brawling at the deli counter when one old lady didn’t hear her number being called and the guy skipped and went to the next number. Well, another old lady heard her number being called and piped up and waved her hand with her ticket in it. The first lady finally realized she had been skipped and spoke up and I thought the lady waving her ticket around was going to throttle her. She kept saying, “Well he called MY number,” I thought about going to grab some popcorn in case it got good.

So after all the depends filling excitement that I could probably stand for one day, without getting arrested for murder 1, I was driving home to hear on the radio that a nearby town had passed a new law. This law states that single serve water bottles will no longer be sold in this town. The main reason for this seems to be that they  claim that bottled water isn’t safer than tap (and it probably isn’t) and that it just causes HUGE environmental issues because it’s plastic and takes for ever to break down. My question was why don’t they seem to care about all other plastic bottles in their town and from what I could tell it was because most houses have tap water. So if you had coke running out of your tap they could ban that too.

Just a side note, if we had a nice sized culling we could save the environment too. Less people=less waste. Just sayin’

Enjoy your day!

Female characters

Female characters

I spent this afternoon writing a few pages, most of it centered around a new female character that I have introduced. When I went out for a smoke something popped into my head that someone had mentioned to me about focusing on and maybe making stronger female characters or just more of them when they were reading my first book (yes, it was a female).

so i went through the females in my books and reviewed them in my head. I have a doctor/nurse who is charge of a whole hospital who knows how to fire a gun competently, and has survived five years past the end of the world.(Have to include the end of the world part for all the girls in the book actually.) Then you have a wife who happens to be one of the best friends of and confidant/adviser to the leader of a clan of over1000 people.  You also have Eva who we only meet briefly but she went to find her sister during the end of the world to help keep her safe, pretty strong I’d say. You also have Mikey’s mom mentioned who we are told works at the hospital, which can’t be easy, as well as the wife of the team leader who slaps the hell out of Mack for getting her husband killed. Lastly you have Sam who is a girlfriend/soon to be wife and mother? who makes sure that her boyfriend stays in line.

Most of these characters also appear in the second book along with at least one new female character that is a clan chief and an ex lawyer. So running all this through my head I have to say that I believe that I have pretty strong  well rounded female characters considering it’s a post apocalyptic, action adventure story told from the point of view of a militaristic clan chief who’s gearing up for war.

This got me thinking about the females in my life. The ones that I spent the most time with and have been the closest to have always been very strong women. Starting with my mom who was always very sickly and had a lung removed at a young age, still managed to raise me and keep my dad in line while never complaining about how sick she was. My best friends in school always ended up being girls and they all tended to have some of the same qualities. They were  all stubborn, opinionated, and very smart. Also, my wife is a pediatric nurse who deals with children with cancer, as well as possessing all the other qualities I have mentioned. All of these lovely ladies in my life past and present probably explain why my female characters tend to be strong. I may not write enough about them in my books but they are most definitely not weak.

Anyway, back to it, enjoy the day!

Huh?

Huh?

I have no idea how the rest of you bloggers do it. I have been trying to think of things to post about for days. Granted, I’ve somehow been trying to tie them into writing as well so that this blog doesn’t seem like senseless rambling. To be completely honest I haven’t come up with an actual topic yet but I needed to blog about this to give other bloggers, who do this sometimes everyday, credit on how hard it can be to come up with something to talk about.

You would think that being a writer I could always come up with something to post about, but please remember I am also NEW to writing and blogging.  If you notice I have now managed to tie in my rant to writing at least somewhat. 🙂

I had a post about past lives that I thought would be cool, and also a second topic about something I’ve forgotten completely so I had to scratch that as well.

I noticed Kim Jong Il’s son in the news threatening S. Korea which I thought was fun, then I figured I could do a post about him being the new bad guy of the world and twist that to writing about how every story needs a good bad guy and now this guy is basically it. All he needs is a cowboy hat and Jonny Walker and he can be just as batshit crazy as his dad!

Ah well I guess it’s back to the drawing board to come up with something relating to writing. 😉

200 +

200 +

So I finally finished 200 pages of the second book last night. earlier that day I had also sold 200 of the first book in under fifteen days. Now this may not sound like a huge amount to some of you but I’m pretty happy with it. I will by no means be retiring to my own private island anytime soon but it will hopefully help pay the bills.

I was happier by far surpassing the 200 page mark than I was with the sales. The last book came in around 360 pages total when I was done so I’m guessing I’m about half way done with the second book if my estimations are correct. I really would like to wrap it up and have it edited and up for sale by the end May or early June. I’m not sure if these goals are attainable but I like having a deadline. It gives me a purpose, a reason to write.

I got stuck for a couple days in this second story, I had finished one major section and knew where the next major section started but I was having trouble bridging the gap. I’m sure it’s not an uncommon problem for writers but since I’m so new to this game and know no other writers personally I have to just assume that any difficulty I may come across has already been come upon and overcome by many and much better than myself already.

Off to see if I can get some actual work done, enjoy the day.

Meteor over Texas

Meteor over Texas

Today I read a yahoo news story about how people saw a plane, not a meteor, flying over Texas a couple days ago. I looked at the picture that yahoo had available and zoomed in on it with photoshop and low and behold there was no plane there to be seen. The contrail from said plane as well looked nothing like any other contrail from a plane that I have seen either. Now, I’m not an expert in planes but even from a quick glance at the photo on the story I could see it wasn’t a plane.

I also read the comments left by people on the story and a few of them lived in Texas and supposedly saw the incident and seem to be completely convinced that it was NOT a plane as the government claims. Have to say I’m gonna side with the comment leavers and say that it was NOT a plane. This isn’t the first time I’ve seen this kind of thing though… Which brings me to the point of today’s post.

When I was a lot younger I heard a story which gave me the inspiration for my book After the Storm. Scientists had reported that they had been studying a meteor for the last ten years and after going over the numbers again and again they were sure that it was indeed going to hit the planet Earth in about 17 years. They made their announcement and it was covered by the news media for a day or so.

It got pretty good coverage actually, and a couple days after it was announced that the scientists were actually wrong and the meteor was definitely NOT going to hit us at all and that it would miss us by more than a million miles. Seems pretty odd that these experts in their field could study something for so long and be off by so much, and then suddenly discover their mistake AFTER they announced it. Seems really odd to me, actually it sounds really fishy to be honest. Well, truth be told it sounds like an out and out lie but i was trying to be nice.

A few weeks later I remember mentioning it to someone and they told me that I was crazy and that they had never said it was going to hit us just that it was going to barely miss us. I then went to some other friends and brought it up to them and they agreed with the first friend. After that I went to outside sources and could find no trace of the story and bringing it up to people that I didn’t know. Some of them vaguely remembered but for the most part I got the same reaction as my friends.

Now, I’m not saying people are stupid, well I’m trying not to say it anyway, but i find it odd that people only hear what they want to and only listen to sound bites. i find it kind of sad actually that no matter how hard you try and get someone to listen, most never do.

The same thing happened during 9-11 I was watching the coverage in a hospital waiting room and heard that one plane had refused to answer radio calls and that fighter jets had been scrambled to intercept. a few minutes later that jet “mysteriously crashed in a field in Pennsylvania and the feds were on the scene and had it roped off before the media got there and didn’t allow any footage to be filmed. Now, that one I understand because the “right” thing to do was to shoot the plane down before it took out the white house or whatever target they were aiming at and possibly killing thousands of people. I do get that the american public isn’t and probably never will be ready to accept that we shot our own plane down but they didn’t need to try and make heroes out of the poor people that died on that plane. I don’t mean this to be inflammatory it is just another example I remember of this kind of thing happening.

I do apologize if I just offended anyone it was not my intention, I just really dislike my government lying to me and the rest of the public and treating us like we are idiots. If they don’t want us to know something they should just outright say we aren’t telling you. I am perfectly fine with the ” We can’t tell you because it’s a matter of national security.” line, If I don’t need to know then I don’t need to know, but please don’t treat me like I’m an idiot.

Hey it’s Tuesday!

Hey it’s Tuesday!

So I killed someone today, well one of my characters anyway. It wasn’t a major character but it was not an insignificant one either. I was out for a ride after I wrote this section of the book and noticed that I felt kind of sad and contemplative. It was odd really, considering it was a completely fictional character and it still made me feel sad. I guess I am getting more attached to my work and characters as time goes on.

I know that I often look back on things I’ve written and feel whatever emotion it was that I was trying to evoke but I had never felt sad at offing a character before. It was pretty interesting and dreadful all at the same time. I really don’t want to be a writer that won’t off a character if it’s best for the story just because I can’t bear to do it. I guess it will just have to be something to keep an eye on as I go.

Have a great day all, back to work with me.

Oh yeah, the book

Oh yeah, the book

For those that have read the book I’m telling you now this is just to fill people in who may not have read it yet.

I Suppose I should actually post something about the book “After the Storm”.

It is a post apocalyptic novel set five years after a meteor has crashed into Earth. 95% of the population of the US has been effectively wiped out between the meteor, earthquakes, volcanoes, lack of food, sickness and riots. I say US because the main characters have no idea what has happened to the rest of the planet since there is little to no mass communication anymore. The government took it’s best and brightest and hid them in bunkers across the US for two and a half years while the general populace has had to fend for itself.

The story picks up five years after the meteor and is told from the point of view of Duncan Mackenzie or Mack who is the head of a clan that lives in a town just outside of Boston MA. The government has come back in a much smaller capacity and the man in charge is not really someone who should be in charge. In some areas of the country the governments aid was welcome and much appreciated, but in some places, such as the north east it was shunned and met with disdain and violence in some cases.

The story follows Mack and his “clan” as they try and survive in a harsh new world and remain free at the same time.

Thursday!

Thursday!

So as I have sometimes posted in my other blog Thursday is usually grocery day. I often come home from grocery day very angry and think that the world needs a culling. As usual I think it again this thursday even though there was no particularly bad thing that happened, I just think the world is far too overpopulated when a grocery store parking lot is jammed packed at 2PM on a thursday.

Anyway, I spent all day yesterday trying to get websites linked and all that crap so today I will work on getting some more pages of book 2 done. The first book had just about doubled last month sales and has already broken 300 for the month of march. It may not be a huge number but I’m very pleased that it sold half that many.

Book 2 is nicely taking shape, the story is filling out nicely and hopefully people will enjoy seeing my characters back in action. I’d say I’m almost halfway through with writing it and hopefully will have it up on Amazon sometime in late May or June.

off to write some more pages!

website crap!

website crap!

So I spent all day trying to get all these sites linked. Not sure if I’ve actually accomplished that or not but I know that the OFFICIAL facebook page is now up ( I had made a group before I didn’t know you could make an official page as well). The After the Storm site here at wordpress looks better and has more links on it. and my goodreads page looks better, even though I can’t get it to link to wordpress because they only accept reader profiles not author profiles, Bah!

I’d like to get around to adding some stuff to this blog about the actual book and about writing the second book as well. Eventually I will I guess, it just seems to be taking forever for all this marketing and networking stuff.

Ah well, back to it.

Thanks all,

Don
