The joys and confusion of working from home

In case you don’t know, my primary job is being a writer. The coolness factor in this is A. I get to say that I’m a writer or author when someone asks what I do and  B. I get to work from home and make my own hours. Now, I’m relatively new to all of this so I’m still adjusting but all of this in and of itself is a lot of fun… A LOT. It does have it downside though such as having to try and set yourself a schedule and adhere to it so that you don’t feel like an unproductive douchebag. You also tend to become more of a recluse if you don’t have to change out of your PJ’s to do work.

All of these things can be overcome with a bit of discipline and a little flexibility. Every now and again though something comes along to throw a monkey wrench into the works. Today it was my dog Lily. She’s a wonderful 2 1/2 year old German Shepherd and normally she just curls up on the couch and does doggy type things to while away the day. Today though she’s been feeling especially needy. She watched me get all set up to get to work (I don’t have an office yet so I work in the living room) and Lily decides it’s time to spend some quality time with dad. She hops her 63 lbs self up onto the couch, nudges the laptop out of the way and spins around so that her butt is pressed up against my shoulder and flops down onto the couch and stares lovingly up at me with her big brown eyes. Needless to say dad melts.

I tried for a bit to hold the laptop at a different angle and tried typing with one hand while balancing the laptop with the other. Neither of these ideas worked very well. I also thought I might be imagining my precious pups need for attention and every time I moved the laptop said pup would adjust her self to be more in the way, including at one point resting her chin on the corner of the keyboard.

She has now been fed a delightful dinner of freshly chopped up liver and I believe she is happily in a meat coma at the foot of the couch. Once I’m sure she’s out cold I may try once again to get my 1000 words done for the day. Back to work with me!

Enjoy your weekend,

Don

P.S. One great thing about being my own boss and working from home is that I get to actually schedule in nap time if I feel like it. 🙂
